hawkeye sputter
#1
hi guys,
put the 2x4 hawkeye thru its paces yesterday. as previously stated it has 25 in mudlites on the drivers. this little thing is a beast!!!! i went everywhere my 2 buddies on their sp 400's went! (they with 27 in mudlites!) no, when they switched on the 4x4 and took off into holes where the mud was over their tires i didnt try it. but anytime the mud was hub deep i was either tight behind them or in front of them. i believe the irs along with some decent tires truly does make a dif on a 2x4. i must confess i enjoyed myself probably more than i would have on my sp 600! u have to think about things a lil differently and work it a bit more when in the thick stuff. i had a blast!! only had 2 step off and help it out 2 x's. one of those times i merely put both feet on one running board, and gassed it real good. i'm told i put on quiet a good show gettin to the end of that stretch of road. without havin the fronts pullin (as with a 4x4) the fronts tend to go where they want to. anywho the rears started bitin, i was standin on the right runnin board, we were movin and i wasnt about to let off!! i got all over that road!!
did encounter one slight problem and it has been addressed in this forum. i dont seem to have any sputter EXCEPT when comming OUT of water. didnt seem to make any difference if it was 6 inches deep or 2+ feet deep. i have read about it in this forum i believe and hope someone can either address it or link me to what they found. i gave it a good cleaning today and the airbox was bone dry and no evidence of water gettin in.
thanks in advance, donnie

on mine it was the carb vent line. it was routed down by the rear tire. after my dealer ran this up by the bars and cleaned it all out right up to the carb we have only had it sputter once. try that and then trace all your vent lines as the factory seems to be routing them in some really stupid places.another guy on here had his tank vent pinched.good luck

I cut about a foot off my vent hose, i cut it a few inches below the inline filter up near the gas tank, i'm hoping that stops the sputtering when coming up out of the holes. So far it seems good, i haven't been able to drive it much though.

ok. forgive me guys, i'm basically non mechanized. what does this carb vent tube look like? (clear...black..?) where is it located i.e. where will i find it originating on the carb? where should it be running to? i had the side panels off over the weekend cleaning it and it seems its a booger to see or get to anything. i did note with interest that there is a vent tube of some sort coming into the air box besides the air intake. its maybe a 3/4 in black hose and has a small triangular piece of foam as a filter tucked into a same shaped plastic pocket. could this be the culprit? hmm...got me thinking now.....nah.....theres also the main snorkel.
appreciate you guys pointers

Just look at the carb, there are two clear tubes coming out of it that connect to a T fitting, then the tube runs up to the gas tank on the left side, then back down on the right rear side of the tank and then it continues down and back towards the right rear tire. I snipped mine off a couple of inches below the small filter or whatever it is.
