What type engine oil to use?
I have an 04 Sportsman and am getting ready to do my first oil change, 20 hour. ( I bought it brand new from the dealer, got a great deal). Anyway, do you guys use the expensive premium 4 synthetic oil (4-cylce) from the dealer or is there a cheaper just as good oil you are comfortable using? Thanks in advance for your response.

if you are doing hard riding why would you narow down the spectrum of coverage by going to 10/40. The bottom line is once the oil is warm its 40 wieght ...the 0 is the thickness at cold start. for how much you will save in a year compared to the price of a machine/labour I stick with manufactures recomended products.

Sticking with "manufactures recomended products" is only a good idea IF the "manufactures recomended products" are better than aftermarket products.
In the case of Polaris oil it is NOT better than the average name brand synthetic oil you can buy anywhere and in many cases it is not as good.
So I see no reason to buy their oil and pay their price when I can buy better oil for the same price or for less.
And for those who assume you MUST use 0-40 that may be true if you live in a climate where it is 30 below and you ride in those temps on a regular basis.
For the vast majority of the US 0-40 is not really needed.
I use Castrol Syntec 5w50 all year round.
