2004 Sportsman 400: Who has one?
#1
I need info on this model if you can give it. This will be my first ATV purchase and I need a workhorse. I need to pull trees, large rocks, etc... over sloped, rocky land. Also want to use it to plow in the winter. I'm in Central PA if that helps give an idea of the terrain.
I'm looking at buying one with 300 miles on it.
Thanks.
Mark

Read this http://www.powersportsnetwork.com/en...e.asp?veh=7232 they sound temperamental.

we bought 2 04.5's back in....u guessed it....late 04. for my .02 worth, they r the perfect balance of power and weight. we have several sportsman atvs that ride in our group. 2 700's (carbed) 1 600, 2 500's and the 2 400's. all are outfitted with 27 inch mudlites. 10's up front and 12's in the back.
u can bog all of the bigger machines down in the same mudhole, and ride either one of the 400's in and pull them out 1 by 1. that 400 engine and the 27 in tires just seems to be the right combo.
neither one of the 400's has been anymore temperamental than the other machines. fact is the the 700's and the 600 have all had clutch issues. (our dealer fixed them forthwith) 500's have been just as solid, just seems the xtra power makes them want to spin down or out quicker.
when we ride down a long smooth road the bigger machines will eventually pull away from the 400's. (ok, a quick show of hands.....who bought their atv's to ride on smooth roads?)
i'd buy another one and not think twice about it. but as i said......just my opinion.

depending on how much it is in price look at the new 450 or even a new or used 500. if your going to be doing alot of heavy work then the bigger cc's are the better choice. you will have to use only low range as you will burn out your belt in high if you try to work this machine. the 400 will do a god job if you remeber its not a skidder. just my 2 cents.
