buying 06 spt 500
#4
the 500 engine is pretty bullet proof and been around for a long time so its a god one. the efi has had a few issues w/ the 500 only but they have worked them out i beleave. cant go wrong w/ the carb model and a little cheaper i beleave.

you guys correct me if im wrong, but the 06 500 Carb dosnt have PXT tires (oh well) and EBS. if you want things like that and an 06 model, your going to have to get a 500 EFI.
that or look for an 05 500 Carb

You're correct spyder .. the 06 carb model has the 25" biased tires as opposed to the 26" PXT radials. And it doesn't have EBS like the EFI. The 05 had both those features. As for the EBS, some like it, some don't .. I'd like for it to be selectable.

The EFI seem to have more issuse than the H.O model. SP 500 EFI owners reviews vs SP 500 H.O owners reviews.
Here's a side by side specs of both seem the EFI has a smaller gas tank also. EFI vs H.O Specs
I know 4.25gal vs 4.13 gal tank is not much but I freaked out enough when they went from 5.25 to a 4.75 gal gas tank in 2004 ,,that was bad enough.
As far as I'm concerned they should make the tanks larger on ATVs not the other way around.

FWIW, this past spring I bought a pair of 2006 Sportsman 500 EFIs and they have been bulletproof so far. I have not had any of the issues that some others reported as being problems with the EFI models early on. I believe that by the time I got them those issues were addressed. My family has done a lot of riding so far this year on varying terrain and they have performed great. A friend with a 2005 500 HO had some trouble while on a tough ride with big swings in elevation, plus he ran out of gas well before I even came close. That particular ride had a lot of rock crawling, running creek beds, etc. and was a little over 60 miles. I got back with fuel to spare and he ran out near the end of the ride.
I would not hesitate to buy another EFI model one bit.
Good luck on your purchase,
chad

Thats my point,60 miles is what my old 88 350 Big bear could do, now I have a 2001 SP500 H.O with the old 5.25 tank and it can safely hit 90 miles on any trip. My dads 97 Non H.O SP 500 can hit 100 miles easily with its smaller 34mm carburetor.
Now the new sp 500 hold over 1 gallon less gas than they once did! Even polaris's little entry 2x4 300 Hawkeye has a larger tank (4.5 gal) than there flagship SP 800 EFI! it's just plain stupid.
