Trail Boss 330 Gearcase noise
#1
Hi;
Have 03 330 TB and am getting a clicking noise in the gearcase. At first I thought it was a sprocket, and or chain, but have replaced the sprockets and now the dealer just put on a new chain and it is still there. They think it might be the internal chain in the trans as it only happens in forward and under load. ANy one ever experience anything like this and how hard is it to remove the gearcase. Trying to save some $$$ by doing the time consuming labor myself. Power and lower end torque seems perfect.
thanks

all the clicking noises that I have had have always been with the 520 drive
chain. It is best to put a new chain & sprockets on together at the same
time(at least the front sprocket for sure) so they wear in together. If u
did not ride much with the new sprockets & old chain, it should still be all
right, it will just just take a little longer to wear in with the new chain. put
lots of lube on it at first, that should help. also have u ever changed the
oil in the gear case? could be water or bad oil in there.

Hey dirtsnow, thanks for the info. I think you might have hit on it in your first part. I did change the front sprocket a few months back and when I did the noise went away for a bit, but slowly reappeared. Then I replaced the rear and somewhat of the same, but then the chain got real loose and out of adjustment. This is when I had it replaced, but the small sprocket was on there for a bit against an older chain. You are the second person that said replace all at same time for proper wear. Think I will get that done first and see where it leaves me. Will update asap.
Thanks

Hey thanks dirtsnow, that was the problem. Replaced the front sprocket and the noise is gone. Just replaced the 22 inch rears with 25 inch mudlites for better traction and more ground clearance. Cant wait now to go this weekend and test it.
Thanks

Have been using Castrol Chain lube which is suppose to be great for them. And I use it regularly, but I think my problems started when I did not keep up on having the chain tight. Oh well live, learn and then pay . We got 3 years and about 3500 kilometers out of that set, hopefully longer this round.
Thanks

I had the same problem with my trailboss 330. I tried to go cheap when I busted up the front sprocket and only replaced the sprocket with the intention to replace the chain on the next payday. Well I forgot all about it until I was at a jamboree and was a very long ways from the truck. It continued to work but the noise was ugly sounding. I replaced both chain and sprocket and magically it went away. Didn't think they could make that much noise.
