there is a cross member a pressed steel plate between the two shock towers in the rear of the x2. anybody knows the purpose of the piece. i am thinking of removing it so that i gain 2 additional tie down points for when i trailer the x2

It sounds like you're speaking of a strut tower brace? I think I remember seeing that in the '06 Sportsman brochure for the X2 models. They help with cornering/handling of the machine. I suppose with the additional weight of carrying 2 passengers it's needed.

dad54, does that x2 have a 1.25" hitch reciever with one connection point on either side, simular to your classic reese hitch for a pickup? those are perfect spots to tie on to, or directly to the frame underneath the foot well.

yes it does ,but we like to compress the shocks when we trailer to keep the atv from bouncing and loosing the straps.my other atvs we hook to the shock tower but the x2 has this pressed metal plate blocking the towers

My guess is that it stiffens up the side to side motion. I personally wouldn't take it off. If you have someone with you have him/her sit in the box while you tighten the strap. I've had no issues with straps coming off when using this kind of technique. Also, you can use the ratchetting type that pulls down more solidly as you tighten it. I've held pianos in the bed of a pickup truck using this method.
