Default New to ATV's: problem with starting Engine

Hey all, im pretty new to ATV's.
I recently was given an 1996-98 425 Magnum 2x4 from a client. Ive currently bought a new battery, and a new sparkplug, it has half a tank of gas, and all else seems in good shape, it was given a new transmission about 2 years ago. although, i still cannot get the engine to fire(i can get it to turn over though). When i was given the machine, they didnt have the manual to it. can somone please give me some ideas on why it isnt starting up?

Appreciate the help

Try starting it, then pull the spark plug out, is it wet w/gas or dry, if wet then you might have a bad coil or plug wire or not getting power the coil, check to see if you have spark, if its dry then your not getting any gas into the CYL., you might have a bad fuel pump or the carb might need to be cleaned or rebuilt. Check and make sure or gas shut off is on, ive seen that happen before to. Good Luck.

start by draining gas if its old( you can smell it it smells bad) then if it is pull the carb and clean it, replace fuel filter. like it has been said, does it have spark, is it getting gas, too much gas. a few questions that need to be answered.

It was completely drained when i recieved it. We replaced the spark plug. The first plug in there was dry, even after cranking it. I have yet to cheak the filter, thats my next step. How exactly do i clean out the carb, do i need chemicals or can i just wipe it out?
Now it being dry when i got it...., i dont know if the fuel drained into the carb, it was on reserve tank when i got it. (the fuel in it right now is new fuel, i put in bout 2 days ago)
How exactly do i check spark?

have you ever worked on a atv? take the car b off, get a can of gumout, take the carb apart 4 screws on bottom thats the float bowl, next take out the jets and spray gumout into all the holes every where in the carb, look for junk when all done spraying down blow it all out with compressed air, check to see if the float is working properly.

put it back together and put it back on, make sure you got gas going into the carb, next pull the plug hold plug by a head bolt and turn the motor over, the plug should spark.

do you know anyone else with a atv? if so ask for help its the best way to learn

I would highly suggest getting a manual before you start. If this is your first time and you don't have anyone with experiance to help you you're asking for trouble. Dealers are not very happy when you try to do it your self and then bring it to them. Good luck, TORK.

jusst make sure that you have everything laid out maybe write down on a piece of paper where things went as you take them out so when your putting it together you look at the paper if need be. very important to have all the small ports cleaned out w/ carb cleaner and compressed air as well.
