Default Pull starter

I have the factory seal (Metal clamp)still on my two Sportsman 450's ...My question is should I leave this alone or should I at least try it to see if it even works............I just don't want to be in the middle of the bush and my electric start will not turn over..........On the other hand I want to keep the factory seal on to keep it water tight.....Caper.............Thanks...

How many of you guys out there never used the pull start yet?
Or how many of you tried to use it and it was rusted or seized?

use it and make sure it works.if you lose your starter or dead battery this is the only way to crank your bike.

Haven't even given it a thought Caper. Now you have me curious. I'll wait until I need to though. But, I don't think it would be much of a problem. Looks pretty well sealed.

I have an 03 Sportsman 500 with the pull start. Mines good but you have to play with it toi get it to retract. Have used it several times in that I have gone thru three starters in three years. Rust Rust Rust. Water was getting inside thru the starter attachment point where an O ring is supposed to keep it out. I ussed grease to seal it up by applying it to the area around the sarter gear just before inserting it into the housing. As well the housing on the pull start side of the machine dosnt even come with a gasket. Ihad to go to an earlier year and order it. Water was getting inside the housing regurarly and for all I know is still in there. Mt starter gear assembly sounds like complete crap when I start the machine, rattling all the time as if theres something loose in side. I have installed two of them in the life of the machine. As you might have guessed theres alot of water crossing going on in the riding that I do and eliminating that asspect of riding aint happening. Any advice about these water problems is welcome aside from telling me to quit riding in water...
