4x4 randomly kicking in?? or not coming on when i need it!
hey all,
so i have been messing with my new quad (99 scrambler) for a couple of weeks now trying to get use to it and find the problems and fix them which i have done pretty well so far. i have come across a new problem which is the 4 wheel drive. When i have the switch off it does stay off that is until i do donuts. i have had a couple instances that it kicks on while doing donuts and is very irritating. also when i have it on sometimes it wont kick in when flip the switch which is very irritating when im pulling stuff or just trying to get up a soft bank. i have read that if there are low fluid levels in the hubs that it may cuase this. i pulled the caps off my hubs and they are packed with wheel bearing grease? is this right or did previous owner mess up? also how else might i trouble shoot this problem. switch? what about ingaugement in the hub? anyway to test it? ]
thanks for the help

if you have grease in the hubs that is wrong. i would take the hubs apart and clean every thing well and inspect the cage and spring around the rollers. then if all looks well reasemble and put the correct fluid in the hubs. make sure to tighten up the nut properly.!!! i have also used dexron atf in mine. the fronts on my sportsman is the same as your scrammy and yes when i do donuts or spin on the snow or ice the right side will kick in. also it is hard to disengage unless you put it in reverse and spin the tires. also check your axle shafts for wobble.

be sure you check the armature plates and make sure they are not worn or grooved
also if you take apart the hub make sure you read the manual and use the proper torque and tightening sequences when putting it all back together
if there was grease in there and not fluid I would really make a good effort to clean everything flawlessly. Its gonna be a pain, but not as painful as going 60mph and having one of those hubs engage
good luck
