Default atv tie downs must read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me and a friens werer traviling down down the hwy after a day or riding we were doing about 70-75 mph on our way home when all of a sudden we felt a bounce we thought it was the wind until we looked out the back window and seen my atv rolling in the middle of the hwy luckly no one got hurt on eather side of the hwy so when traviling with your atv use heavy duty straps even if thay are more than what you need the straps that i was using were red and thay come in packs of 4 for like 10-20 $ thay were thin and crappy i thought thay would hold up but hay dident the part that broke was the mettle ratchet part so please be care full when towing your atv and use very good straps and dont be like me and have to run into the hwy to get your atv.

yah i use a 2 place snowmobile trailer the only thing that gets me is all 3 straps broke so be sure to have a fail safe like hook your winch to your trailer or use a chain once my atv fell off it just rolled i ran over to it an it fired right up dosrnt seem like anything is wrong but i have to look over it yet

My dad bought a set of these cheap things back in 1999 when he bought his first ATV. He bought them the day before he got his Sportsman 500 at a tool auction place that sells stuff like the Harbor freight and other cheap tool discount houses sell. I think he paid $3.99 for a pack of 4. He lucked out on his though, because I met him at the dealership to help him get loaded up. I broke the webbing on 3 of the 4 straps just trying to get his machine loaded. It actually was pretty funny to see the look on his face when the things popped. I let him borrow a pair of my Ancra straps that were probably 15 years old so he could get it tied down and home. Needless to say he didn't buy anymore bargain straps after that. I was just glad they failed before he got on the road.

i have a similar story but nothing to do with straps. i know a guy that bought a new polaris utility atv and when he loaded it into the back of the truck he didnt use anything to secure it, well he took off it rolled back and knocked the tailgate open and it went flippin down the road. pure stupid!!!!

Sorry to hear that dude. I think everyone knows someone or knows someone that knows someone that lost an ATV out the back of a truck or off a trailer. That's got to make you sick to your stomach.

My uncle works at a Harley dealership. When they get new bike in, they come in crates with ratchet straps holding them in place inside the crate. The dealership would disgard the straps after uncrating the bike. He has always kept me supplied with decent quality straps. I would use them for 5 or 6 trips then toss them when they started to show a little wear. They wore out quicker than most because they had no hooks - it was just one big loop.

After hearing a few to many horror stories like yours, I bought the LA Guard Dog. They also have a Trailer Dog. They are expensive (about $140), but at least you won't be wondering if the straps will hold.

A friend and I loaded our Sportsmans on a large trailer, one that normally is used to haul a bobcat. It has fold up ramps on opposite sides of the back corners. they sitck straight up in the air about three feet when haulikng and are held in place by pins. WE needed to go about 3 miles to our riding point so we loaded em end to end and put the brakes on. As we pulled out onto the short stretch of highway and came to speed the driver looked into the rear view mirro, I heard him say "Uh oh..we just lost a wheeler' I looked back and saw that MY Sportsman which had been loaded last had rolled straight back and split the uprights while on its waay to the pavement. The amazing thing is that It not only rolled straight off it only had three inches to spare in order to make it thru the upright loading ramps. Dropped two feet to the pavement and rolled lazily to a stop in the middle of the highway, speed limit 55! Cars were far anough back that they just slowed up. I think I was moving faster than they were. Almost had a heart attack. That story nevere fails to make the rounds in a circle of riders.

Thanks for the heads up, have those cheap red straps as back ups, but use heavier ones. Need better back ups. Don't know how thin they are till you buy and open them up. Amazing two of you had them roll off at hwy speed and no damage? I see people take off with no ties at all and wonder why? How? What?
