Does Polaris or anyone make a hitch that can be put on a 99 Sport 400?I know that this is an odd question, but it's be bugging me for a few days now.

In the summer the county fairs around where I live have ATV Rodeo's and one of the events is a pulling contest. It looks like fun and I was playing around with the idea of trying to set the Sport up for it.

Thank's for any advice.

Ther's a hitch that goes over the rear bearing carrier and is held on by the two long bolts that you loosen and tighten when adjusting the chain. Its hooked on at four points(top and bottom of bolts), so it should be pretty secure. You can probably get one from your dealer.

The hitch off an Xplorer should fit. At most you may need to get longer pinch bolts, but I would bet the stock will be long enough.

I agree with Farmr123, the Xplorer hitch should fit. We hook up to machines that don't have a hitch with a 1" wide strap sling, 3' long, we reach as far forward on the swing arm as we can, drop one end through, pull it back and hook into both ends. This works great, however a hitch with a little height will pull down on your machine helping to gain more traction. Check on height restrictions of hitches so you don't get in trouble. Putting a strap on the rear of your machine to compress the suspension will also help, hook up to something to pull and watch how the back of the quad lifts up. By strapping it down you transfer this enegry to pulling traction. Air pressure is also important, just enough to keep the full face of the tire in contact with the ground, if there is not enough pressure the tires will cup in the center. It would be a naughty trick to fill the tires with water, guess this would bump you out of the stock class. Have fun pulling, Good Luck!!!!!!

Thank's for the replies from everyone.I'm going to try and put a hitch a the Sport next week.

Les, the water in the tires sounds like a good idea, but I can't do anything that will sacrifice my handling. The County Fair's that I race at really don't have any strict set of rules for pulling with ATV's except that you can't add weight to your quad.

The pulling looked like fun and that was the only event that I couldn't compete in because of the lack of a hitch. If you could pass along some more of your advice in pulling I'm listening. The only tricks that I can't try are ones that will effect my handling.

If you like you can see some pics of my 2 ATV's and read about my mods and the type of riding that I do at my homepage. My ATV stuff is on page 9.

I will check out your pictures, do you have or can you get any information about the weight sled. I built the one we use several years ago (1992) now it is too small. When I built it a 350cc utility quad was about the biggest unit around, I am planing on a new sled this winter if I get some of the other projects out of the way. I'm looking for any ideas to improve the new one.

The sled that they used this year was just a plain sled and after each pull they would simply add weight, which was a block of cement that was raised and lowered onto the sled with a tractor.

Next year they are supposed to build a sled that moves the weight to the front as you move forward.I'm not sure if they will actually build one, but they are talking about it.Those guys take their pulling serious.

It seems that the most competitive ATV's are the Polaris's.There was one Artic Cat ATV that was fairly competitive, but the event was won by a Polaris.
