2006 Polaris sportsman 500 front tires kick in with 2 wheel drive mode
#11
I've got a 2000 SP and no issues in 6 years. It works like the day I bought it. I've had to replace other items, rear diff boot, speedometer cable, and an oil seal next to the oil drain plug. But that's it in 6 years. I think I'll hang onto it.

is the problem with the front diff only from spinning the rear wheels aggressivly and having the front diff lock up harshly while in 2wd?
i would like to avoid the problem if at all possible.

Well, I can say that if any bad luck takes place, it would be to me. I am not going to say if this has happened to me, cause we all know what would happen then!

The main problem is the diff. engaging when in 2wd, thats whats causing the cage to brake, if the switch is in 2wd then it SHOULD NOT be egaging into AWD when the rear tires are spinning, this diff. is a **** poor set up. I dont ride hard or abuse my machine its has been very well taken care of, its plowed snow for one winter, been on 3 rides and under 500mi. and already the diff. is junk, the rest of the machine is so far is great, but once the word gets out about this problem people are not going to want to buy these machines if the diff. cant last more than 400 or 500mi.. I have always heard that Polaris has had **** poor customer service, but knowing that I guess I am the stupid one for buying it, should have kepted the GIZZ.

cableguy,
I know people that leave the quad in awd all teh time. None of them have had problems with the diffs. It really is not a bad design but they really need to beef up the cage with steel.

I guess if I wanted to ride like a sport rider I would have bought a sport quad. I could leave mine in AWD forever and not even notice a difference. I don't intentionally spin the tires and I don't ride at high speeds. Maybe thats the difference. Not saying that Polaris front diffs don't have a design problem, just wondering if the problems are mostly associated with a certain riding style.
Good luck guys.
