I have had problems now with my hubs not engaging or engaging when i don't want them too. I have read that you can use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in them instead of the polaris 4wd oil. What kind of synthetic oil it is? Is it 4 cycle oil, like a 10-4? Or is it a gear oil? Where can you buy it at? I would really like to get it fixed. Also my light for the 4wd isn't coming on at all. What could be the cause of that? Thankyou for your help.

I will do the best to answer your questions. The oil that many recommend for the front hubs is Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). You can get it at about any auto parts store. The Polaris manual says you can run ATF if you choose not to run their product. As for the AWD light, it soulds like you have a bad/dirty connections somewhere. This could be causing some of the problems with your hub, such as not engaging. If the switch is not getting power, the hub will not be getting power and will not engage. I would check your wiring diagram and start checking the wires with an electric tester to isolate your problems. Maybe someone can post some more specific places to check as I haven't had any problems with the AWD and have never tore into it. Hope this helps.

Well I dont know about the Mobil1 oil, but I was told by a Polaris rep to use type F transmission fluid in my hubs on my Sportsman500. As for the hubs engaging and not engaging at time the oil it self is probably not going to fix that. Have you ever changed the oil in the hubs? Do you ride in deep water alot?
The light not coming on could mean that you have an electrical problem which could extend from the Magnetic Coil in the hub gone bad to the wires (wiring harness) from the grid to the hub having a break in them. I am not saying that this is your problem, but these are problems that I have faced in the past. The last time my hus engaged when I did want them to it was due to the water I had accumlated in the hubs that seized them together causing me to rip the teeth off the armiture plate on both sides.
So that is my suggestion on the oil in the hubs and a few suggestions as to if the oil does not fix your problem you might want to look at, and the hubs are nothing to fix 20 minutes a side.

My Scrambler riding buddy was having problems with only one of his hubs engaging. This was happening in two wheel drive mode. I drained his hub fluid, added the Mobil 1 ATF, and he hasn't had a problem since.

While we are on the topic, when I change the hubs, am I supposed to fill them back up at 3 o-clock or 4 o-clock?

I fill up the hubs at 12:00, and then rotate to 3 o'clock to drain excess. Object is not to fill them completely. I had occasional engagement with the AWD switch turned off, and had the space between the magnets adjusted by the dealer to I believe .001". Polaris needs to do some work on the hubs and the engagement.

I don't know how much the adjustment cost, 'cause I had all the brake pads changed as well. Although I rarely ever use the brakes since I have the EBS, wonder why I waited until 2800 miles to get new ones?
