Hey, is there any one who would know why my polaris sportsman 500
would be leaking oil from the exhaust manifilod on front of machine.
I just rebuit the motor and it started leaking a little while later, any help would be
greatfully be appreciated.

is it going thru oil? sounds like maybe the rings are letting the oil up from the base and out the exhaust. just a guess. maybe too much crank pressure building.

 

On any engine rebuild, ask yourself...did you hone the cylinder before installing new piston/rings? Are the ring gaps staggered instead of exactly one on top of another? Are the rings installed in the correct order and orientation? Are the cylinder/piston/rings all the proper size? These basic engine rebuilding problems can cause oil to make it into the exhaust.

 

My polaris sportsman 500 exhaust manifold is smoking, but no oil is leaking on outside? Been sitting for 3 yrs, did oil change, and replaced fuel. Pulled air filter and held my hand on hose to do whatever that does ( worked )! ! But smoke on pipe has me worried?

 

Sitting 3 years could cause valve guide seals to harden and leak oil into the combustion chamber. Same thing on rings if cylinder has a corroded area on the cylinder walls from piston being in one spot all this time. May clear up after riding a while. If it doesn't you may have to take the top end down and check it out.New valve guide seals,valve lapping,honing cylinder and new rings may bring it back to shape.

 

Has the same problem with my Magnum 425, just got it rebuilt, it's not a lot of oil, but enough to have me a little annoyed. All the rings are in the right orientation, cylinder honed, and NOT burning any oil, it almost looks like it's coming from the valve cover????? I'm gonna dig a little deeper after I wash and degrease it.
