I am slowly taking care of the laundy list of small issues. I checked the chain last night. I see the brake caliper bolts (there are 3 of them), I see the two on the swingarm, but I don't see any place to insert a punch. There is only one big sproket and the brake caliber. Am I missing something?

On mine, I use a large pipe wrench and turn the axle (carrier). Never had to use a punch through the sprocket.

I must be doing something wrong. First off, this is an automatic if it makes any difference (which I don't thibk it does). I loosen the 3 brake bolts about 1/4 of the way. Then I loosen the two big bolts on the axle. I roll the ATV forward about 75 to 100 feet and the chain seems tighter than it was. So that is good. Then I tighten all the bolts back down and push the ATV back into the garage and the chain is loose again. Now it is much worse than it was. It sits on the rear frame. What am I doing wrong. I spent about an hour on it and gave up. It should not be this hard! I did get the hood off lol!

there are only 2 bolts that are i think either 7/16" or 1/2" that holt the caliper on. you only nees to loosen them a little. plus the 2 bigger bolts w/ lock nuts around 15 mm or bigger cant (remeber). there should be a few holes in the sproket and one hole set by it self(differnt size dia. i think) and when punch inserted or small round bar(comes w/ tool kit) in thru the hole it should line up w/ a hole in the housing which stops the sproket from spinning serprate from the axle. its on a camber so when pushed or pulled it tighens the chain. it tells how to do this in the owners manual.

Is your brake disc on the transmission or on the axle? If it's up on the tranny, don't worry about loosening the brake caliper. How old are the chain and sprockets? If they are real old the chain may have a bad spot and need to be replaced. Also your 250 is nonconcentric I believe. This means you will need to compress the rear end while tightening the chain. When adjusted it should have a little play. The nonconcentric models will have a little more slop in the chain.

Ok, somehtings not right. In '96 the rear brake is located on the transmission. I'ts either not a '96, it's been modified, or the disc you are refereing to is the sprocket gaurd and not the brake disc. Is the big disc you are loosening right next to the sprocket? This is the sprocket gaurd.

Hahaha... I looked it over really well this morning and it is just the guard. I am such a noob. So atleast I don't have the loosen those bolts. I'll keep playing around with it today.
