Default 700 Sportsman falling off on topend

A friend of mine has a 700 Sportsman. In short, you can run it up and down the road several times and it runs perfectly, pegs the speedo. Then out of nowhere it'll fall off. It will either fall on its face at 40mph and won't run any faster without backing off the throttle and trying it again. According to him, sometimes when it is running faster than 40mph, it'll just fall off and drop down to the 40 mph range.

I checked the atv over and haven't discovered any problems. I'm thinking the fuel pump may be going bad. Any ideas? I'm not very familiar with Polaris atvs, so all advice is greatly appreciated!

I have posted alot about my 2002 sp 700 problems. Just search 700 and see what you come up with. As for a couple of use we have found broken spark plug caps on the ends of the wires. I also had some clutch trouble.

Good Luck,

is the engine cutting out, or is the rpms staying somewhat up and just loosing speed? if its loosing speed check the clutches/belt for wear. if its cutting out maybe loosing fire thru the aboved mentioned.

The motor is not producing the power. I'm pretty confident that it isn't the CVT. The motor just seems to lay down and not pull full rpm. It reminds me of having a governor kick in to limit the speed, except it is not cutting out. I believe it has to be a fuel delivery problem, but we will keep checking for other possibilities. And this doesn't happen all the time, you might make 6 or 8 runs down the road perfectly and then out of nowhere it just lays down.

if it were a fuel problem i would check the plug to see if its running lean right after it does it. another thing it might be is when the valves heat up/tighten up it may be too tight in which it would loose compression/ power. just a thought.

Very simple check. Check the buttom of the boot that attaches the carb to the head. Theses are rubber and crack easily. The problems will be intermittant and as you decribe. My 04 700 had the same symptoms and the boot was cracked. Easy fix.

personally it sounds like the fuel bowl runing out of fuel, if this is in fact a carb setup, if you have a fuel pump in this setup forget what i said

Thanks for all the info guys! I mentioned to him to check the boot, I don't know if he has yet but I haven't had the chance to go look at it myself. I might get a chance to look at it tomorrow.
