What octane to use???
#5
Which octane to use depends solely on 2 things. First, and most importantly, is compression ratio. The higher the ratio, the higher the octane is needed. That's why the old muscle cars that ran 12:1 or more compression used 110 octane or greater. Higher oct needs to be compressed more to burn correctly. Likewise, lower oct need lower compression. Put low oct in a hi comp motor, and you get detonation (very bad), Put hi oct in a low comp motor and you get incomplete combustion and carbon build-up (also bad). Use the right oct as directed in your owners manual by the mfg'r.
Second is altitude. The higher you go, the thinner the air gets, resulting in a lower compression. That's why you see 83 and 85 oct in the mountains out west. You won't find anything less than 87 near the ocean (denser air).
