Default How does the 4x4 work through the speedometer

I have a 2002 sportsman that im putting together and the speedo dont work. I have the suspension off so I cant see if the 4 wheel drive works yet, but with the quad running nuthing lights up and the needle is on the wrong side of the button. Ive read that the 4 wheel drive works through the speedo if the other sutff is not working I assume the 4 wheel drive wont either, am I right?

If the speedo is not working, the AWD may or may not work; depends on what has failed in the speedo.

Unfortunately you are right and you will have to come up with approx 300 bucks cause your speedo is bad

The speedometer only supplies the negative connection for the 4X4 system. This is a safety feature that only lets the 4X4 system turn on if the RPMs are low enough (about 12 MPH in high gear). You can easily bypass the speedometer by tying one wire to ground but you give up the safety feature.
