Default 98 Scrambler 400 issues

Hello, new to the forums. We have a 98 Scrambler 400 4X4 that has at minimum a wiring problem. Does anyone have a manual or a wiring diagram? The wires to the stator have been cut and spliced (incorrectly) to a small black box in the front and some others are just hanging there. We were told we needed a new stator or a new wiring harness. I could get a stator off of ebay but not sure which one is correct for my ATV or what all is needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have searched for a manual but clymers doesn't make one for the 98 and I can't locate an OE service manual. Thanks for the help!

contact your local polaris dealer, they should have one for ya. Or they should be more than happy to answer your questions.

Hey thanks for the reply. None of my local Polaris dealers have one instock but they will happily order one for $100 and it will take two weeks. Almost forgot one dealer wants $82.50 but they aren't sure when it will be in. As far as help the people that I talked to weren't real helpful.

If you can't find a manual, try to locate all the wires and just corrospond the right ones and solder them together. I know this isn't an easy fix so I wish you luck. That sucks about your dealership not wanting to help you. The first impressions are always the biggest.

I would but I think the stator is the wrong one. The guy I got it from said he thought the stator was from a different year like a 96 or 97. I have a few wires left over. What is the small black box 2X2? It has 5 wires out of it and the stator has 7 wires. The ones that matched up are already matched but a few yellow ones I am not sure about. Any clue? Thanks for the reply.

one of those black boxes is the voltage regulator and one is a rev limiter. 82.50 is cheap for a stator imo.

I think he may be speaking about the manual for 82.00
If you dont get a manual we can help ya get it wired up. The yellow, and the yellow/red should go to the voltage regulator. (the flat black box) to the right - if your facing the front of the quad.
Do you have a pannel style terminal board under your hood?
What other wires do you have hanging loose from the stator? Does the atv run?

Hey guys, okay. Lets see, yes I was talking about a manual. The cheapest we have found a stator for is on ebay for $128 buy it now. I looked at mine and compared the one on the 98 Scrambler (from ebay) and it "looked" the same however I couldn't see the color of the wires or how many there were. This is what I have out of the stator.......

Yellow connected to circuit board (yel)
Yellow/Brown Stripe not connected
Yellow/Red Stripe connected to circuit board (yel/red)
Black/Red Stripe ------ CDI
Brown ------ CDI
White ------- CDI
White/Red Stripe ------- not connected
Red ------- not connected

The CDI has 5 wires out of it as follows:

Blue connected to coil
Black connected to circuit board (left side)
White connected to white from Stator
Black/Red stripe connected to same on Stator
Brown/White stripe connected to Brown on Stator

The CDI box has a # on it CU2515
4AO5
EC38PL

Stator just has FF95 stamped on it..

Hopefully this will help you guys help me figure this out. Thanks again!

Well, as luck has it, I just found out that I have a stator and flywheel from a utility quad. Ya me....At least I know why the wires don't match!
