heh, I called Rick Ritter. Really nice and helpful. I have located a couple of stators and flywheels but before I buy I am trying to figure out a few things. First the case is empty (no oil) I filled it, spun the engine over and drained it. Then refilled it. I checked it by screwing in the dipstick. Looked a little high but since I don't have a manual I am not sure if I read it correctly.
Second, what is the pipe/hole on the bottom left side of the case?(left side as you are sitting on it) There is nothing attached to it. At first I thought it was a place for the lower radiator hose (like a car) then I remembered I was working on a quad. I reached as far as I could but I didn't seem to go anywhere. Maybe a vent for the clutch? I dunno, just guessing.
Well, all in all Rick asked me the history of the quad and I told him I wasn't sure. He told me if I have a bad bottom end (rod bearing/crank bearings) then I would probably have a parts quad. Not something I really thought about when i picked it up. Strangely enough when I pulled the sparkplug looking at what I could see, the piston looked new. Maybe a top end was done and the oil drained in the crankcase. If so, how did they know the stator was bad? Anyone have a borescope laying around? (j/k) I hate to poor money in it just to have to buy another engine. Anyway, what everyones thoughts?

Well, the dipstick in the case under your carb is the counterbalance oil. It takes 3 oz of motor oil. (I use 15/40) You dont thread it in to check it. The crank case itself dosent take any oil, the crank is lubed by the injection oil.
The big "pipe" down bottom, behind the clutch cover, is a intake for the clutch. Your gonna want to put a piece of flexible hose on it aand run it up towards the top of the machine. (if you ride in the slop).
You can pull the carb off, and the reed cage out, then look inside at the piston. A stock piston has 2 perfectly round ports / holes in the skirt. A Wiesco piston will have oval ports.
Also, Id do a compression check on it. With the throttle wide open, or the carb removed. Your gonna want around 120lbs of compression.
Good luck
