First oil change today. Is this normal?
#1
I finally racked up 20 hours on my scrambler 500 and I changed the oil and filter today. I found quite a bit of metal fragments on the drain plug tip. It was worrying me so I wanted to know if this is normal. I know on some of my mustangs that had moly rings that there would be a slight bit of breakin shavings on the drain plug as well. Just making sure that this is normal for a polaris engine.

Yes, this is normal. I don't know if they have a break in oil in them or not, if so, you probably should have changed well before 20hrs. If not, I'm sure you are ok.
Just keep a new filter in there too, when u do the oil. Its all aluminum, so that is why there are more shavings.

The dealership told me to change the oil at 20 hours. That is the only reason I waited this long. I wanted to change at 10 hours but I waited for 20. I asked about them having a break in oil and they told me that it was just the standard polaris synthetic oil in it from the factory. Now that I'm done with break in it's on to the mods I guess. I also picked up a new ngk plug that I'm going to install when I do the pipe and k&n so I can judge the air/fuel better than with the old plug.

I experienced the same thing with my 2006 Sportsman 450,
shavings around the drain plug threads. Is it that the
drain plug magnetic? I think we are okay, I followed all
the Polaris instructions during break in and didn't run
it hard, fast, or long at one speed nor tow or haul.
And my oil change was on the dime with hours and
mileage.

Yes the drain plug tip is magnetic like many auto oil pan drain plugs. I experienced the same thing on my DSS 331 that I put in my mustang that had a canton oil pan with a magnetic drain plug. The engine was built with moly rings so I was told to expect some shavings for the first 500 miles.

you will find a little metal in the oil when you change it but small shavings like metal not big chunks. chances are your seeing the normal amount that we all see.

If what you saw was the same as dragging a magnet through a sandbox, fuzzy type of fragments, then that's at least common and at most normal.
If you keep seeing metal at subsequent oil changes, then there could be a problem.
