Has anyone tried to mount the MV second tank on a ?regular? Sportsman or know if it can be done? I hate the idea that I only have 4 gallons of gas on my 800. I may never use the 4 gallons in a single trip but I would like to know that I do have more if needed. I would also prefer no to carry reserve cans of gas. There must be some way to permantly mount another tank???

quadovator.com sells a kit that will let you carry a gas can, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

 

Actually, Quadovator's kit works with all Sportsmans EXCEPT the 800, because of the double exhaust. And since I'm too cheap to buy the Kolpin Gas pack, this is how I solved my extra gas problem:

I have an MV and had an 800. By looking at this, it looks pretty complicated to make it work! I THINK the exhaust cross over tube would be in the way also!

 

Why did Polaris make their fuel tanks smaller as they made their machines bigger (and MPG lower)? All my friends with newer machines are very jealous of my 5.25 gallon tank. On our longer rides, I usually carry extra fuel in case THEY need some! Maybe the engineers have stock in Kolpin![img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]

 

If you get a chance would you emal me some pics of where and how the second tank mounts? Maybe I can figure a way to fab one in. Also is there a switch that switches over to the second tank and then the bike runs on the second tank or does the second tank fill the main tank? I just feel there must be some way to mount more fuel on the bike to extend time between fillups without pulling over and using some sort of a jerry can.

As to why such a big bike has such a small tank???? You got me!

If you ever have to change spark plugs on your 800 (or 700 for that matter) you'll wish that tank was SMALLER! Houdini would have a hard time replacing plugs on these machines. There just isn't enough room for a bigger tank without requiring some major disassembly to perform minor maintenance.

 

I will shoot some pics to you. If yours is a carb, it will be easier. Replace your fuel shutoff switch with one from an MV. There is "OFF", "FRONT", and "REAR". If, yours is EFI, then it is still posible, you'll just have to come up with a way that you like! Also you'll have to cut a hole in the rear rack, to access the fill. I will send some good pics. Be ready to spend some dough, the rear tank is something like $250
