I own a 2001 scrammy 500ho. I don't believe it does have a rev limiter

Yes it has a rev limiter, & for a good reason. Here is a post from another thread someone had about buying a different CDI for the 500.

"DO NOT, I repeat.... DO NOT!! buy a CDI for the 500 Scrambler engine that gives you more RPM than stock. It's a proven fact that these engines will self destruct at anything over 7,800 RPM. Furthermore, go check out Aaen performance's website. On there is a dyno readout on the 500H.O. engine & it makes it's best power between 5-7,000 RPMS. So basicly anything over that your just beating the engine anyhow.

So, basicly a clutching setup that lets the engine turn 7,000-7,200 is all you need."

I understand the over rev , but how about the timing curve to increase power. I have a 2003 and a 2001 500 scrambler. At top speed I don't think that the motor is at 7,000 rpms. I don't have a tach yet. To me it just seems like it is out of power at high speed. There is a cdi rev box for a 97-2000 scrambler 500 on e bay. I have an 01. Part #'s are different from year to year. Has anyone tried this on an 01. Love my scramblers!!!

Russ136..... if your clutching is stock it may not be turning 7K, but I bet it is or is very close. I have a Hot Seat kit & my tach shows 7,000 on the nuts wide open. Wildly spinning from a dead stop it will sometimes rev to 7,200 but will quickly drop back to 7,000. The shift characteristics are modified, but I doubt the rpms are increased with the kit. Even with my tach if you don't actually look at it, you'd never guess it's revving that high. I think it's because of it being a "big bore" engine. The sounds is deeper, giving a lower revving sound output.

I do agree with you about the timing advance for more power, however I have yet to see a "rev-box" that gives only more timing without the over rev. The difference in CDIs from '97-2000 & 01's thru current is probably 'cause the newer 500s are H.O. engines.

the only rev boxes i have seen are from PROCOM and they are only for the 04 and up models... i thought i would buy one and see if it would work on my 02 but the plug is different,,, thru a little research, it seems that every other couple years, they change the plug type on the cdi boxes,,, so it would be hard to interchange models...

i still think that the best bet for bottom to mid range power is in the clutching,,,,,

I think Polaris uses the clutching to act like a rev limiter. I know on the 2 stroke motor you can change the rpm to run higher with the change of the primary spring. But even on the 2 strokes most dyno numbers are around 7200 rpms even on those. My Trailblazer with the reedcage conversion is still only running up to 7000 rpm max. Maybe someone knows if Polaris run the 500 motor advanced as much as the 2 strokes are I had to retard mine 2 degrees with the mods I have.
