Default 700 SPORTSMAN WON'T GO IN HIGH RANGE

I HAVE A 04 700 SPORTSMAN, GOT ON IT THIS PAST WEEKEND AND CAN'T GET IT IN HIGH RANGE UNLESS I TAKE THE LINKAGE OFF. IT ALSO SEEMS TO HAVE A LOT OF SLACK IN THE SHIFTER. I WAS GOING TO TAKE THE BLACK HOUSING OFF BUT AFTER I REMOVED THE BOLTS IT DIDN'T SEEM LIKE IT WANTED TO COME OFF AND DIDNT WANT TO DAMAGE IT.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

Are you stepping on the foot brake when you try to shift into hi?

Is it an electrical block that stops them from going into high and park or is it mechanical somehow? It sounds like it is a simple issue with that stop somehow.

Ok, I looked it up and there is a spring that goes from the brake pedal up to a lockout pin just below and to the right of gear indicater switch. If when you step on the brake and the spring doesnt pull that pin out far enuff then you wont be able to go into hi range or park. I am assuming that it wont go into park either.

dirtbo, your issue could be rectified by looking in the " black box", about 6 screws to remove after you disconnect the linkage, this is a box with a few gears, and greese, take a look at a parts diagram by going to a polaris parts order site, i went to my dealer's web site and eyeballed the diagram, these gears are marked to aide in placing them back correctly, after you wipe the black greese off them, putting the box back togather can be alittle difficult but i did it, after trial and error, i can walk you through it if need be, last NOV. a freind ground up one of my gears, and my ride would not go out of high, $12, and putting the box back togather a few times, i was back in to power heaven.
