2006 Polaris 450 vs 500 H.O. (carb)
#1
Hi,
I am buying a new 2006 Polaris ATV and have narrowed it down between the 450 Sportsman and the 500 Sportsman (Carb, not EFI). I noticed they have the same ratings from the front and rear rack and towing. Is it worth the extra cost for the 500? Does it have a big horspower difference? Would it burn much more fuel than the 450?
Thanks.

the main differnce is 44 cc's and a 40 mm carb vs a 34 mm. from what i was told by a dealer(take it for what its worth) is the 500 carb was phased out because the 450 is almost as strong as the 500 carb. the steering is also so easier then the 500. this is the main reason i bought the 450 for the wife.

I would pay the extra for the 500 on this fact and this fact alone.
The 500 (499cc) motor is over 10 years old and has been used in more polaris ATVs and ranger products than any other.
The 450 (455cc) is a two year old motor, in the sportsman line, replacing the old 400 (425cc) motor.
The 500 is bullet proof. Plus in twenty years you can say you had a polaris sportsman 500, the most popular utility ATV ever made, well most popular polaris anyway.

i would say that my 02 500 was about 8 mph faster then our 450. i was tring to think what the dealer told me that the 455 was made from. i remeber asking about being a new engine and he told me that it wasnt it was just redone out of maaybe the magums?? i cant remeber.

Not putting the 450 down, as I have heard no problems thus far. I dont know why polaris just didnt put the 450 stickers on a 500 carb and call the new EFI the 500. If they wer going to drop the 500 carb anyway.

Anyone know the top speed of the 450 and 500? How about the horsepower specs? My cousin has a 2004 Sportman 400 (425) and he said the 500 has way more power. I am guesing that the 450 has closed the power gap some. It seems the 450 and the 500 are the exact same bike with the exception of displacement. I am thinking it is probably worth the extra $500 it will cost me.
