Default 2001 Sportsman 400 idle problem

Engine was serviced last year. Ran great all summer. Once weather got cold it will not idle. Adjusted the idle screw as suggested all the way out-all the way in. No change. Ran almost a tank of gas through it, etc. Runs good but can't get the darn thing to stay running when throttle is released. Any suggestions.

are you sure it was the idle you adjusted? if you srewed the idle on the way in(to idle it up clockwise ) then it would have taken off by it self it would being idled so high. just a thoguht.

Adjust the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control). It is an adjustment on the throttle cable right near the handlebars.

Headusher, I second tmorris. My sons ATP had a similar problem. Inside the throttle housing on top of your right handlebar there are two contacts that need to stay apart about a 1/16th of an inch. If they make contact the engine stalls. Some kind of safety measure to force you to keep excessive free play out of the throttle. There is a bulge in the throttle cable just below the handlebar. Pull back the rubber cover and tighten the throttle cable so there is a gap in between the two contacts. There is a good chance this will solve the problem you described.

Thanks for the replies. Verifying that the screw I'm adjusting is the idle adjustment. Will check out the ETC adjustment this weekend. I'll let you know what works. I did flip the dang thing on it's side last summer (almost cracking my hip bone). Maybe that messed up the ETC adjustment. I know it messed me up for a few weeks. Love my Chiropractor!!
