twist throttle or stock atv thumb throttle?
I have seen a combo grip advertized in an ATV mag. It has both a twist and a thumb. Has any one used this type?

I just bought a 700 for my wife and it had the twist throttle. She felt comfortable until the first hill and goosed it while trying to hold on. Fortunately she was going slow and got thrown off right away and the quad rolled a couple times. The thumb throttle is back on.

I have not tried them but I have seen ads for one - and only one- product like this. So while I can't be certain, I suspect that you saw the same ad that I did. Read it carefully, because the product is not what it seems at first.

At a glance I thought it would provide both kinds of throttle mechanisms so that I could either twist the grip or push the thumb lever, whichever I choose, any time while riding. That seemed wonderful!

Then I read the fine print. It said something like "converts from a twist to thumb throttle and back in minutes".

That's when I stopped reading and turned the page.

If you find out otherwise, please let us know!

I have 2006 500 sport and the throttle was positioned poorly for my thumb. I ended up adding an extension to it with a small piece of flat iron from the old ladie's curtain hardware. She was pissed that I took her curtains down, but she got over it. Anyway my thumb feels a lot better. I drilled a small whole in the existing throttle and flat iron. Bolted them together and I bent the flat iron to the angle I wanted. I added a thumb warmer wrapped the whole thing in heat shrink tape. My thumb is no longer stretched at low speed and the added leverage takes away any feeling of a sore thumb after along ride.

Well, I can't be sure, 'cause there may be more than one on the market. Just be sure to read the fine rint when you see the ad again.

You want to grip it with your legs. If you grip it hard with the handlebars, that's where beginning riders mess up and end up cranking WOT if they make a mistake.

Also, you are not turning the handlebars nearly as often on a bike as you are on a quad. You lean a bike, where you lean and turn the bars on a quad. Just imagine the technique you are going to have to learn if you're on a quad, handlebars full right on a berm or powerslide, and you want to crank your wrist to open the throttle.

By the way, I once had a ride on a Kawasaki 400 with a Twist-Throttle. I didn't like it for the same reason.
Good explanation. I changed my 400EX to a twist throttle once and hated it. When I was really aggressive with it in cornering (ie.. hanging of the side of the quad) I would lose grip on the throttle. I have never lost grip with a thumb throttle because you do not have your hand all the way on the bar opposite from were you are positioning yourself. It was night and day difference to me and I was 100% faster while cornering with a thumb throttle.

Finger throttle instead
The DXTrigger finger throttle is a better option!
