Engine noise?
#11
stendori,
There are buttons in the primary. They are guide buttons almost like the ramp buttons. This is what the outer half slides in. The clutch will chatter on idle when these wear down. Almost sounds like piston slap. The buttons are replacable and if you let it go it will ruin the primary. There are 6 buttons in the primary and 3 in the driven/secondary clutch.

yea i know there are fiber puck like buttons but i didnt think they would make any noise. there are shimms that goes w/ them when you buy a rebuild kit. they would have to be alot of play between them and the towers to make noise i would think.

if its the fiber buttons inthe primary then youi need a specail tool to take the spider apart. labor is the most expensive. if you could take the clutch off and hand it to them it would save you alot of money. if you pull the c.cover off you should be able to see if its missing one.

like i said if you could get the clutch off and hand it to them @ 40to 60.00/hr it could be expensive for a 2.00 part. have you even pull the cutch cover off to check it?

I agree. With a machine of that age you need to look at that entire clutch assembly. If you have wear into the pulley along with the other problems mentioned then clutch assembly replacement may be the answer. The part is pricey but you eliminate the labor time of clutch disassembly at the dealer as long as you can pull the clutch yourself. You can buy the polaris tool or make a homemade one using pieces from a general puller set. Good luck.

Everything looked good when i had the cover off just couldnt figure out where the noise was coming from since it only does it when the engine is running. The clutches looked smooth and they seemed to function properly.

just dont try to use a reg pully puller that grabs on the back side of clutch as you will break it b4 it comes off. need the one that screws in the thread whole to go agaist the crank.
