WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE THE COIL FROM THE HUB OF A 97 SP 500.

You have to take the end cap off the hub, as well as the 'guts' that are inside. When you take it apart, pay close attention to get everything back exactly as it came off. Remove the front brake caliper (and do not squeeze the brake handle while it is off) and remove the front wheel. The coil will be easy to spot. I never took one out before, just adjusted one once, so removal/installation is not my experience. I do know to set the pole gap to a thousandth of an inch or so. Only the outer piece is movable. Before you take it out, be sure it is getting power, as you don't want to take it all apart to find out later you just had a broken wire.
