'98 Xplorer Smokes alot and won't idle
#1
Hey guys,
I could use some help on this '98 Xplorer that's driving me crazy. I bought it from a guy and it wasn't running. It's got good compression (117 psi) and fires right up as long as you push the throttle all the way in. In order to keep it running I have to depress the throttle lever completely. Obviously, the first thing that ocurred to me was that there was carb. problems. I completely overhauled the carb and while it does run a little better, no matter how I adjust the choke or throttle cables it still dies unless the throttle is 3/4 to all the way open. It smokes alot while running and gas drips out of the air box when I shut it off. Sounds like it is running too rich to me, but I don't know what else to look at. The engine also vibrates a lot in the frame when running at lower rpm just before shutting off. when I have the throttle open, it doesn't vibrate and runs smoothly, but still doesn't run as wide open as it should. I haven't checked the rpms at full throttle, but would guess they are about half of what they should be. Thanks for any advice you can give.

compression could be better but it would run. did you replace or make sure the float is not sticking as well as it being set correctly? is it a 300 or 400? i know i heard the 400 vibrates alot b4 they put the counter balancers on. they tend to foam the gas in the bowl. maybe the rings are real bad as well since you said it smokes real bad or the oil injection is putting too much oil in. hows the plug look?
