Rear brake piston stuck
#1
Hello all, I noticed on my X2 that the piston that the rear brake pedal/lever contacts to provide rear braking only is stuck all the way back. So, if you press down on the brake lever with your right foot, it goes all the way down to the floorboard. I tried to get it to let go with a little WD40 and gently tapping it with a wooden dowel and it still didn't move. The parking brake on the handlebars is not on and it feels difficult to push in neutral. Any ideas on where I should look next or what I might do to get this fixed quick. Trails open in 2 weeks.

I needed to replace my whole rear master cylinder... guess I nailed brakes too hard and bent piston... brakes were pretty much locked on until I noticed and yanked the piston out with vice grips...
bought new master on ebay for 1/3 the price from dealer..

my piston was bent bad enough that even with it pulled back out, when applying brakes again it would just stick once again... couldn't straighten it so just bought a new one...
remove two bolts that holds cylinder and tie out of the way until you can replace it, otherwise, each time you nail brakes it will just stick agian.. good luck..

Well, I couldn't get it to budge with vise grips. Would the rear pistons (on the rear tires) keep the brake piston by the foot pedal from returning if one of them was seized up?

I had the same problem with a goldwing motorcycle, the front brakes siezed up. The first thing I thought was wrong was the brake caliper froze up but it was the master cylinder. It has a small hole for the return fluid to get back into the resivore and it was plugged. I took a 14 guage multi strand auto wire apart and used one piece of wire to open up the hole. Before after I released the pressure on the brake line the pressure would build up on its own overnight and freeze up the front brake. You can loosen the brake line at the caliper and see if the brakes will free up. If they don't then your best bet is ebay. I just bought a pair of front calipers for $9.99 plus $10.00 shipping. Most of the guys parting out atv's are verry onest and have the feedback to show it. Good luck.

No, it is not under warranty any more. I noticed it doesn't seem to be slowing the rear wheels down at all. I can easily push the quad in neutral. I was told it might need more fluid by my service guy who has about a 2 week backlog with service. I took the seat off and added a little bit of brake fluid but it didn't do much of anything. I'm going to leave it alone for now and see if it works itself free. I don't use the foot pedal much anyhow.
