Default brain fart!

I have a 2004 700 efi and I ripped rear left upper (closer to gear box) cv boot. Right now I got the shaft out with the cv joint exposed (***** are seperated) now my question is (Brain fart here cause I've done this before but don't remember how) how to get new boot on seeing that half of the cv joint is still attached to the shaft.?

Next question is the round hub that goes into the gear box and held in with that little $1.20 c-clip...how much play should that have once its in the gear box? I have about 1/4" free play on both sides. thanks in advance.....

You've got to separate the axle from the cv joint. either by removing the c-clip while the axle is still attached (which is tricky), or by "gently pounding it off".

stick it in a vice and either yank on the cv joint using that 'play' you mentioned or whack the cv joint with something soft like a piece of 2x4 or brass hammer.

grease joint, put clamps on axle, then boot and pound cv joint back on axle and clamp boot.

ta da!
good luck
