The Spring Thing
#1
O.K. Is, say, the green (or any color) spring from hotseat the same as the one from hpd, or rcr, or epi, or even polaris? I've been wondering this for awhile now. I got an hpd pipe from Santa(Thanks!), and have a clamp-on K&N, and was wondering if I should wait a few days and order one from hpd or rcr or hotseat, or wait three minutes and get one from my dealer? Also, which would be better for all-out acceleration? I can adjust my style for the technical stuff, so the "on/off switch" stuff I've read about won't be a problem. Oh yeah, I have a 00 TBlazer.....and thanks in advance!!

The springs from Ritter Cycle and the factory springs are pretty much the same thing. I don't know about anyone else's enought to say.
If you want the most 'snap' you want the green spring. On a 2 cycle engine, it gives the most acceleration gain without cutting down your top speed. The white spring is about halfway between the green and factory.
If your dealer has the spring in stock, I would get it from them as you will save shipping & it should work as good as any.
Good luck.

How does the sping change effect EBS. I have been told by the dealer that EBS will no longer work correctly if I just install the white spring. Is this true? Also, some people change out the primary and secondary spring. What effect does this have. I have an extra clutch lying around the shop/garage with a good set of weights on it. I have been told, I could get the same effect, and tune it to exactly what I want buy trial and error. I am talking about drilling a small hole in the extra set of weights. This would lighten them slightly, and would increase the RPM necessary to engage. If the first try is not enough, I could just go back and drill the holes slight bigger until I get it just right. What do you think?

Greg, i have the green Spring in My '99 Sp 500. the EBS still works flawlessly. No changes in the EBS system at all. If i were you, I would put the Green Spring in your Sp. It will give you more wheel spinning power with those big mud tires that you sometimes run. It engages the clutch slightly higher into the power curve. It's not a drastic change from stock, for experienced riders like yourself. PS, I haven't changed the weights in mine, or modified any of the other clutch compotents. Ride'em hard Polcat

Greg,
I have the green spring on my 00 Xplorer 400cc.My EBS has not been affected in the least bit.I also had EBS on my 99 Sportsman, the dealer installed a EPI clutch kit on it.EBS was NOT affected by the kit on it either.
I beleive I was one of the first folks in here to post about the differances the primary springs make. The spring thing really took off after that posting.
Your idea on the weights is ok,however,it would be very time consuming in comparison to just changing the primary spring.
FARMER123,
you said that the white spring is about halfway between factory and the green spring? My information [Polaris dealership service manual]shows a comparison chart between the white and green springs, there is almost no differance,in fact, the differance in [tensions, spring lengths ect] is so small, you should not be able to tell the differance in them in performance.Know keep in mind that this is indeed Polaris primary springs, others [hot seat, ritter, epi ect] could be differant.Just thought I'd pass that little bit of information to you, have a super day,
Bill

Bill, I got both the white and green spring from Ritter's and tried both. The performance gain is almost identical to both, but the engagement RPM is about halfway between stock and green (with the white spring).
I actually put up flags and clocked how fast I could go in a given distance from a standing start, 4wd, on bare hardpack ground.
Stock went 36
White went 38 1/2
Green went 39
In the performance respect, the deler is right, but my seat of the pants impression is the white allows much easier 'feathering' of the clutch, especially for someone not familar with the machine.
3 mph may not seem like much, but racing side by side with my brother's Xpress I went from a half length behind to one length ahead when we hit 40.

Thanks alot. I think I'll go with the green one, but what about the primary clutch spring? Would any noticeable improvement be made by changing that too? And do wieghts make much of a difference? Thanks again.....

fasternu,
this is the primary spring we are refering to in our above posts.
FARMER123,
thanks for passing them stats along to me.I also have both the white and green springs from Rick Ritter, however, when I installed the white spring,I was not impressed so I ordered the green one, installed it,and was still not impressed. All the long I had a badly plugged exaust.I cleaned out my downspout hole on my pipe and 'MAN' did she run than!Im not at all unhappy about my engagement or performance with the green spring so im going to keep it in,thanks again,

Fatsernu: I think you should forget about only replacing one spring. You would get the most from your clutch by adding the whole HPD clutch kit. It is only $80, and you get both springs, and new weights. My buddy added it to his 'Blazer, along with the HPD pipe, and the gains are quite impressive.
