Sportsman 800 Problems
#1
I'll be getting a new or slightly used quad this fall and am not sure what to get.I'v always ran Polaris because of the power and true 4 wheel drive that the others did not have at that time. Now days they all haul the 4 wheels and have good power.
I'd like to get a Sportsman 800 and was wondering i you guys have had many problems with them and if it was to do over again would you buy another brand(Outlander 800).
Please give me an honest answer or don't bother posting.
Thanks Steven

if i did it over again i would buy another 800 because i like the power it has. its not the fastest by any means but the ride is great. the front end springs are too weak casuing front end dive and sagging but spring spacers or stiffer springs fixed that issue. i know people who have the outlander and the brutes and both have had issues just like any other brand. the 06' models have the new heat sheilds so the heat problem has been somewhat fixed. the twins tend to run hotter then the singles so you will notice it. hope it helps a little

i loved my 800 when i had it, it was the best 4-wheel drive quad ive ever owned or rode. but i chose to get rid of it for a Predator because my riding style had changed having that much power

Quite a few have been having overheating issues, when the radiator gets even slightly dirty,I don't know if they resolved the problem in the newer ones. They do other than that have the best ride out there, I'm not into Polaris, but I'll give credit where credit is do. I also see that on this and other forums, the overheating issue has also been caused by a bad relay.

When I was out in West Virginia there were some Canadians staying at the lodge with us. I have a 5002x, and they started talking about Polaris. They said the 800 was having problems breaking the front engine mount. The one said that he used a hockey puck to replace the oe mount. Said it was a big problem up there.
I have no idea if this is really a major problem, just thought I'd mention it to you.

I have a 800efi sportsman and love it. I havent had a problems out of it. the power is great. the only that i dont like is the one brake handle for all the tires. thats because i was used to having one handle for the front and one for the back. the only that can beat it is a can am but their not made as well as a polaris. you cant go wrong with the polaris either.

cwdavis, not pecking an arguement, but add the KQ 700 to the list, it's been proven over and over, straight up, stock on stock, the brute will get it on the jump also, but the Polaris will catch it and pass it.
Be cautious with the engine brake set up, have seen a few get sideways descending hills because of that, rear wheels only, unless you get the upgrades kit.
All in all it's all in what you want, especially look for a good dealership that has a great service record. Find a good place to "try" one out, or borrow one that is close to what you want. They all have their good points and bad points. Good luck.
