Default no front drive in reverse

Generally if the roller cage is damaged it will not matter if you are in a forward gear or reverse the awd will not work. Even though the icon at the speedo is lit you may not be getting voltage to the armatures when the button is pushed. I would check this first and see if you are getting voltage. If not you found the prob and can backtrace from there. If so you know its mechanical in the Hilliard. Good luck.

Well, it sounds like a different problem than the roller cage then since my 4wd also works flawlessly in forward. I've not experienced any problems switching in and out of AWD in forward either. Just a dead front end in AWD in reverse with the override button pushed.

Riding friends with 05 & 06 700 sportsmans require the override button to be held in for 4 wheel drive in reverse. Others we ride with that own sportsmans say they have to do the same thing.

I think I'll keep my Cat.

Since your awd works fine in forward I am guessing that the override switch is malfunctioning or the override circuit has a wire downstream from the switch that is broken, shorted etc. If you have a service manual it gives trouble shooting guides or if not then trace the wires from the switch into the pod with the pod cover removed and I bet you find the source of the issue.

Actually Polaris designed the AWD to work this way in reverse.
The system requires 20% rear wheel slip before the front locks up. It's a one way deal. To get full reverse AWD, one must depress and hold the override button.

Got this straight from a service manual.

Well, I sure hope that the rear wheels spinning in reverse at 30 mph with the override button held fullfills the 20% requirement Anyhow, I'm leaning towards the electrical issue as well. I'll do some tracing and make sure there is continuity in the circuits.

first of all its actually only 1/5 of a wheel turn to engage the awd. what year bike is this and which sportsman? is it an older model b4 they have the roller cage. alot of time also when the roller cage breaks it will lock in awd w/out even pushing the button. you say the awd light(is it on the pod read out) comes on when you are in awd w/ the overide button pushed? if so i would beleave that would rule out the switch on the tranny being bad as its reading the right gear selected and powering the system. this is just an idear im throwing out and dont know for sure.

I reckon I had better let adrenalator have his thread back, sorry for bogarting the conversation.

Summary of my situation: 05 700, in reverse with AWD on and reverse override button pushed, display (speedo) indicates AWD is engaged (flashing w/SLOW), but front wheels will not engage no matter how fast or slow the rears spin.

Adrenalator.....is your problem identical to mine?

so you have the roller cage style where it locks in from there vs. the hubs. does it kcik in by it self at any time when its not in awd? dont know for sure, but it seems if its displaying the awd in the pod while the button is pushed then it might be right in the hillard front end and could be the roller is broke. maybe casper can dig his book out and read about it where it would be the same front end i think. just an idear. let us know.

Thanks BIgcountryusa.LOL

My problem is the same as yours ,but I think my problem is with voltage from what I have read on here. And as Stendori has said if the cage was broken or cracked it either works or doesent all the time.

I'm going to check the wires for proper voltage and for continuity, and I'll post what I find.

Again thanks for the help.

Cliff
