whats the battery voltage when your trying to start it? that strats w/ the key switch right? any chance the switch is defective and some how closing the power circuit when its in the start mode. just a guess.

I have tested the key switch. Seems to be keeping the run circuit closed when it goes over to start circuit. Voltage at 12 v drops to 11 when cranking. Have put boost to it and voltage stays very good around 12.5 volts.

Check the Electonic Throttle Control switch. It may need to be adjusted. Does it run when throttle is applied and stop when throttle is released?
#6
no, it runs well regardless of throttle position. It has started when I jumped it which is why I relplaced the bettery. I find this problem has ocurred thru out this forum but havnt run into the repair. Anything will help, thanks Hdnvn

I think that should pretty well point to a problem in the starting circuit which may be right in the key/ignition switch. Hope this helps.

so your saying when you turn the key to the run pos. it cranks over the starter/engine but wont fire it up? if this is so, then try jumping the solnoide to see if it fire it up w/ the key on but not turned. if it satrs then maybe the switch is bad. just an idear.

i have a 1999 sp500 with the same problem, if i try to start it with the electric starter then sometimes it will work and some times it wont, it will crank and crank let off, crank and crank nothing give one good pull with the pull rope she fires right up and runs great. i have tried to jump the wires at the starter swich on the handle bars and does the same thing. it turns over really good but nothing. i have put the 40amp jump start on it and tried it and no luck. this is really starting to upset me!!! there are alot of people with this problem but no one puts what fixes the problem. it is a newer switch about 1 1/2 yrs old it has a new stater and new cdi 1 1/2 yrs old also. NEED HELP!!!!! LOL

you mean jump the push button or the key switch? i still think it has something to do w/ the switch circuit somewhere. maybe a fuseable link or a bad wire somewhere thats not letting the power go thru to give actually ignition. just a shot in the dark. sorry best i can think of good luck.
