Went riding this last week with some friends at General Sams ORV park and I did the mud pit. Mud went all the way up to the top of the head lights and seemed to pack in the raidator. I have washed it 2 times with a pressure washer, but it still is overheating. Do I need to take the front storage rack off to clean the top of the raidator? BTW, this is on my sp800 X2, not my bf750. The sp800 X2 has a lot of plastic up front for protection, but it makes it very hard to clean the mud out. Any suggestions?

 

If you remove the plastic shields on the side and remove the fan, it'll be a LOT easier to clean the backside of the rad. Thats where all the mud hides that you can't see. Also the mesh in front of the rad just pops out. o need to unscrew the screws. Pull hard comes easy.

 

the 800's are a pain to clean. i had to take mine right out and clean the radiator. even soaking for a few hrs didnt help. you need to keep on top on cleaning it every ride if you run in mud like we do. if you dont have a winch pop off front cover to get at it or go in around the winch best you can. becareful not to damage the fins too bad w/ the pressure washer.

 

You also need to run a vent line from the overflow tank it will suck in dirty water if you don't add a hose from the lid.

 

We do mud all the time up in Hurley. Our group has Hondas, Yamahas and Polaris' and the Popos are by far the worst for overheating problems in the mud. We always bring a pressure washer and even that can't clean out the radiators. The front end storage on my 800 comes off with four bolts and that let's you get to the radiator pretty well. Pain in the backside to do every time you get dirty though. You can also pull the little cover inside the front storage and access a bit of the top of the radiator from the back like that. It helps and can alleviate some of the overheating problems. My one friends son rides an 800 too and he is constantly in the mud. I don't hit the mud like he does just because of the inaccessability of the radiator. He is constantly overheating and we are always stopping to clean what we can out or to let it cool down. The Yamahas in our group do the best in the staying cool in the mud catagory.

 

i agree that they do tend to he up alot when they are plugged but i ride w/ brute forces and they do the same thing and have smaller fins to plug faster.

Do any of you used other coolants other than ethylene glycol (antifreeze)? I have heard of blue ice and a couple of other brands that I don't remember but they aparently have better thermol properties than regular glycols like ethylene glycol or propylene glycol.

 

does anyone know where I could find a dual core radiator that is much smaller (length and width) than the sportsman radiator? If I could get a dual core radiator, i'd try it in mine (i'm a mudder) mounting it higher (where the existing radiator mounts at the top). I'd bet that'll fix the problem or make it much more difficult to clog with mud-- thoughts?
