Pred 90 died, need advice etc etc
#1
The kid was have a good ol time running the pred 90 around in the hayfield.
It died, make a story short I had to tow it in as I didn't have a spare plug. My thought was the plug fouled. He was driving it slow and didn't "clean it out".
I cleaned up the plug with wire brush and the bike started again but ran like crap, I loaded it up and took it home, sad kid
With the bike now at home I made a NAPA run and got a couple plugs, they wern't NGK stocker plugs but x-refrenced to autolight with same heat range and demensions etc. I don't see a problem with this.
I installed the new plug and a new battery (the old battery didn't survive the winter) and the bike started right up but then started loading up bad and I couldn't get it to clean up.
Now the bike won't do anything, I installed the other new plug and still no fire.
Now the electric start won't work (battery is fully charged and fresh, the fuse link is good) and I got no spark even from a brand new plug. I hold my finger on the hot part of the plug and kick it over I feel a very small twinge of spark but not enough to snap a good arc.
Could the CDI do all of the things mentioned above? I would think coil but I don't see how the coil could effect the electric start.
ALSO, What is there in the way of upgrades for this bike? I never liked the way it runs, always seemed way too fat....wouldn't mind some good snap out of this wheeler.
I found some aftermarket performance places.

neither the coil nor the cdi would effect the starter. you sure the kill switch or key switch isnt messing up and killing the power as it would stop the elc start from working. just a thought. makesure the float isnt stuck open and just pouring gas in to flood(or load) it up.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem/s could be then.
The battery is fine (even used a different battery) but the starter won't budge, I can however hook a hot lead right to the starter and she takes right off. The leads me to beleive a safety check is failing or a bad switch. The switch feels fine and hasn't been wet. I pulled the tether off and pushed the button down further to make sure, no difference was noted.
I still am not getting a decent spark, even with the starter hotwired.
I took apart the console and hood for better access, but everything appears in order. I double checked the fuse at the battery and it's fine, I even bypassed it with no luck.
My oil is full, the low oil light doesn't come on...I will check the float anyways.
bah, this is irritating hunting down electrical crap lol
oh, I wonder if I can upgrade this to have reverse??? It's supposidly a 2005, but says manufactured in 02

found the prob!
someones wire sodering job had failed on the safety tether switch. Wire was stuck there because of a clamp and protective tubing but only the plastic coating on the wire itself was touching the tether switch.
man, one small freak'n wire cause me a headache

My 04 sportsman 90 and my friends 04 90 pred. has the same symptons... Mine died one day, got it started, next day ran died did not get started, did start the next day, ran for 5-6 min died, no spark, next day ran 5-6 min died no spark. Stripped body off, cleaned flywheel in and out, checked gap, no spark then a very tiny spark then no spark... His is in the shop waiting on a CDI, and I fearful that mine is the same. How can I check the stator, coil, CDI. Kids are mad and I'm running out of beer and nerves. I will chk the tether and reverse switch 2morrow. The starter is totally shot so I have to replace it anyway. THKS
