on really steep and loose hills never use low range, the sp500 will swap ends with you. it is much better to use your single brake lever and stay in high range

There is a procedure posted here this past summer for tricking the Polaris 4X4 system so it stays locked in 4WD while descending hills, but due to the system design if all 4 wheels start to slide you could be in trouble. Some do not like to use this procedure due to the handling characteristics it produces.

Here is the procedure:
-Pull up to the top of the hill.
-Shift into reverse.
-Hold down the reverse rev limiter button.
-Blip the throttle enough to spin the back wheels (this will lock in the front hubs).
-"Do not" let go of the reverse rev limiter button at this time.
-Shift into LOW and proceed downhill. The front hubs will stay locked in 4WD.
-To disengage, let go of the rev limiter button and blip the throttle.
-If the front wheels start sliding around too much, disengage the front hubs. You cannot steer if the front wheels are sliding and may loose control.

Only try this on small gradual downhills at first so you can see/feel and understand how your machine handles before attemping real steep hills. Center of gravity, balance, and skill play the greatest role in a safe descent.
Hope this helps....and play safe.
