I have to agree with you that a 500 is a big machine for a newbie 12 year old that has no real seat time. I'll tell you what though, my son got a gas powered snowmobile for his 2nd bday which I attached a dog leash to and ran behind him while he drove around the driveway. That way I could lift up the back of the machine if he got in trouble. For his 3rd bday I got him a gas powered atv. He has had 3 50 cc machines, a 90, a suzuki eiger 400 and now he is on a wolvy 450. He has almost 1500 miles in this season and rides better than most adults I know. He, like my friends kid is always sandwiched between two of the adult riders and we are very careful about maintaining our speeds and what type of terrain we take them over. Our motto is that our group is only as fast as the slowest machine and we are never in a hurry to get anywhere.
This is a very good way to bring Kids(riders) into the feel of power at the controls.!!!...........As for the two kids 12 and 13...........If they started at a young age driving something..........The switch over (to quads) would be another step for them.
Another good point you said ........."always sandwiched" this tells me they are not riding alone yet!!.........Kids alone on a larger quad may try stuff when the mom/dad are not watching!...............Caper..........

i wonder if the 12 year old kid is already like 5'4" or if the 500 has the throttle limiter screwed in a bit (i wonder if it has one too) stock 500 goes 60-65? i have no idea, cuz its a 500 HO liquid cooled vs a 376 aircooled that we have and it still goes 58 on a downhill. I wonder if the kid is scared to top it out though, i topped out our eiger for the first time when i was 13 and i was shaking when i got off, now its no big deal, o well.
i hope the 12 year old is either a natural or a mature rider who knows whats stupid and whats safe, and has never said "hey watch this"

There is no sporty 500 that goes anywhere near 60 mph. I have had two brand new 07 sporty 800's, granted with 27" ITP XTR's all the way around and neither of them will go over 55. I keep hearing all these speed claims from people and either every bike that my friends and I own are dogs or people have no real clue how fast their bikes really go. I rode the Sporty 500 HO this weekend and it is significantly slower than my 800 and slower than my boy's wolvy 450.

I too had a 96 400 sportsman that would hit 60ish.96 425 Magnum around 55.Now my 500 Scrammy will hit 65-67.And here is the kicker my 03 330 Trailblazer will hit 55mph taching 6350rpms,
If your 800s wont top 60mph you have some major clutching issues.I have worked on a buddies 04 500 Sportsman and with almost stock clutching it will hit 60.
Back on topic I still say you dont over size a kids quad.It is cheaper to up grade quads than have a child hurt.

I think a lot of it has to do with how a kid handles things, and making sure the parents make responsible decisions on buying toys. When I started riding sleds I was on a 1968 Snowcruiser and 3 years old. Then it was a 1978 AC Lynx and then a 1995 Polaris XLT when I was 13. Now how many parents would give their 13 year old kid a 600cc triple that would go 120mph?? Hopefully just mine LOL I guess the moral of my story is make sure as parents your kids are capable and mature enough for whatever you buy. Start them off small and make sure they aren't getting over their heads.
