let's see if I can explain how to tighten it up. at the rear axle, there are 2 bolts that look like they clamp down onto the mid section, loosen those up. looking at it from the rear, there's a bolt on the bottom side (again at the mid section) on the left side, loosen it up also. after you loosen them up, use a wrench (channel locks or pipe wrench works) and on the mid section turn it away from the bike. its a bear to turn sometimes. you'll see the chain tighten up when you turn it. hope this helps.

First off compress the rear suspension till the bike is level, I use a ratchet strap from the bumper to the axle
Exact words in my 98 explorer book...
1. Loosen chain gaurd
2. Loosen two eccentric locking bolts,(these are the bolts embler spoke of)
3. Insert a pin punch through the sprocket hub and into the eccentric axle housing, (this is on the right side when looking at the bike from the rear)
4. Roll the vehicle ahead or back to adjust chain slack to the proper dimension, 1/4"-1/2".(It can take a pretty sharp push to loosen the bond between the clamps and hub)
5. Tighten the eccentric locking bolts to 60ftlbs
6. reinstall chain gaurd
P.S. If you go to Polaris.com you can download the owners manual, it'll help explain with the diagrams.
