Got a 96 polaris sportsman 500 with a constant ping in engine. The pinging is constant with the RPM's. Any suggestions?

 

Sounds like u might need some topend work, thats the bad deal with 2 stokes they usually high maintenance, Good Luck

It's actually a 4 stoke

 

Valves might need adjusting? Just a thing to check.

 

How hard is it to check the valves?

 

pull the gas tank, put the piston at top dead center compression, pull the valve cover and run a feeler gauge under the rocker arms.

If you have constant ping, the timing might be too far advanced. Or you've got a bad batch of fuel. Try running higher octane and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, I'd bet the timing needs to be retarded.
