Burnt component
#1
I changed batteries the other days and I'm pretty sure I connected the terminals wrong. I got quite a cloud of smoke and found burnt terminals on this component.
I'm not sure what it is. Either a coil or a voltage regulator.
If someone could take a look at the two picture I have of it on my page I would appreciate any insight as to what it is.
Also, If you have one you are looking to parts out i would be interested.
Thanks,

I think the pics take awhile to get approved.
I've narrowed the search a little. I understand the part is called an ECM.
If any one has any info once the pics show up. please let me know.
I also would like any contacts with used parts sources.
Thanks

It turns out that there was a recall on the part. Looks like I may get a free pass.
So all of you out there who have not heard about a recall on the ECM, it is for several models including about 65000 units. 2004 1/2- 2005 sportsman and others.

Caper,
Why do you think you are on the third module? Do they keep giving you the chinese parts?
I nearly had a fire for all the smoke coming off the thing. I'm hoping it didn't hurt anything else.
Did you say there is some sort of harness adapter?
Thanks

Well my stock one was the same as your picture..........That one gave me a problem one cold winter morning going ice-fishing,Still went fishing though!!!...LOL..LOL....But the quad would shut the motor off when I turn the headlights on!!......This was one of the two built in circuit breakers in the ECM.
Then I e-mailed the dealer told me To swap the one from my wifes to try in mine........It worked fine....................(nice to have a 2006 450 sitting around for parts...LOL..LOL)
He sent me a new replacement by mail........
Now just in the middle of Sept. A week before the Rally in Mattawa,Ontario, I had my quad parked in the yard after working cutting up logs with my chainsaw, The quad was sitting for about 4 hours key was out, I started the barbque and heard my Rad electric fan running on my quad........This is also controled by the Sure Power box........E-mail the dealer again.......This time there was a charge of about $156.00 Canadian Funds......For the part.......So I just bought one local here I needed to go to the Rally in Three days and didn't want to wait for mail order!!!.......
The dealer where I bought local wanted my VIN # from the quad and said I will let you know what Polaris will do to cover it or not!!
That night I got a call from the dealer...She told me to bring the old one back in the box and they would give my money back!!.......Thanks........So I did.
Now the Funny part of this is my wife's 450 still has the one from the factory in it!!!! I can't understand that one.
About the harness wiring......The factory one like in your picstakes the plug-ins directly.......................................... The new replacement ones I got has the silver Made in U.S.A. Sure Power Module Box with a extra wiring harness .....All this does is match your factory plug-ins to plug in directly ........Just a in-line harness!!!........
The new one also comes with a small tube of Electric sealent for two of the three connectors I think, The paper shows the drawing of the connectors...The one that don't need it is the one with the Green flexable base that seals on it's own!!!!
Hope that helps........Let me know if you have any more questions.........
Polaris knows about this problem and seem to react very quickly when I had trouble.........So I think they should cover yours free of charge!!!!......Saftey issue!!!!
Thanks....................Caper................

Thanks for the reply Caper,
The local dealer is giving me a hard time on the module now.
They needed to check the VIN and it was about 100 digits before the printed recall numbers and they say it won't cover under warranty, the wires are toast on it and it was obviously on fire. There was notice about an expanded recall that i need to look into. If the part number on the module matches the bad ones that they know about you would think they would take care of it with out question.
I do realize that I burned it up by my own. But if it is a bad part from the get go Polaris should cover it.
They were more them happy to order one for me at $115.00 US.
I'm on the search now for a replacement unit, I did see a number posted somewhere for the Silver one that you have spoken about.
If you hear of an after market source would you pass it along to me please?
I follow you now about the adapter cable.
Thanks.
