broken chain on 500 scrambler
#1
I just whent out riding in the bean feild behind my house and there is a lot of desent size drifts to jump. I had rode yesterday and been jumping the drifts with no problem. When i tried it today on my second pas over a 2-3 foot drift the chain broke when i landed. Good thing for 4 wheel drive, it would have been a long push threw the snow to the house. I was wondering if it would be wiser to replace the entire chain or if i can just put a new link in it. I have been keeping it well lubed, so i would think it should be in desent shape yet. If it nesasary to replace the chain does anyone have any sugestions as to a good brand and rough price. Thanks

I also broke my chain jumping my scrambler (400) and gotta agree with ya on the praise of 4wd. I limped out on front wheel drive back to my truck. My chain "blew up " in like 4 pieces, so replacing links was not an option. I went with a chain from Krause(sidewinder) pretty pricey but it seemed to be one of the strongest you can get. So far so good. BTW is it my jumping style, or should i say lack of, that caused the chain to snap? always wondered Bob

I have a 2000 scrambler 500 4x4 and have broken the chain twice. When the chain was stretched a little and I didn't tighten it I had no problem. When I adjusted the chain to spec. it broke. The first time it broke was 2 weeks after buying it. I don't think the concentric drive does all it is claimed to do.

Yes Chris we are still riding this weekend. I got a new link and will fix it tomorow. I just came from Glens and am seriosly considering ditching the scrambler for a Rubicon. They are not even close to as sporty but I am sick of fixing the Stinken polaris. Kelly says itl do about 60 or so when its broke in. Even though its 60 pounds heavier I can actualy pick it up with no problem. I will call Tus. noon if i remember to take the phone with me.

Stevescrambler,
Are you ready to convert yet? Your friend Duhan got the new Scrambler 500 in yellow, He thinks yellow ones are faster than red ones. Are you going to prove him wrong?
But seriously, his chain stretched to 5/8" play after the first 4 hour ride. he's not making any adjustments.
Sincerely,
Your Banshee Brother

The concentric drive is not truely concentric. If you try to keep a tight chain, you will absolutely drive yourself crazy as it cannot be done. AS your suspension bottoms out the chain will ratchet your rear axle slightly and loosen the chain. If you keep tightening the chain the only thing that you will do is stretch the chain.
The heavier the rider the more the axle ratcheting. So tighten the chain, let it loosen up to where it wants to be and leave it there.
We had the same problem on a 99 Xplorer. No matter how many times we adjusted the chain to 3/8 deflection it always came lose. We used a torque wrench at 50# every time I adjusted chain. The problem is the concentric drive is not a true concentric system. Have your friend follow you next time you think your chain is lose. When you are sitting on your quad and on the gas I bet your chain is a tight as a banjo string. Your friend should be able to tell you if there is any slack.
We finally got tired of adjusting all the time and just drove ours till you could hear the chain clacking in the chain guard usually about 450 miles.
FYI our mechanic told me the concentric system was not concentric. This explains why so many Scrambler chains have been snapping. Owners adjusting for 3/8 deflection and then landing a jump with no slack = chain break( even a couple out put shafts have snapped here in MN.).
Polaris kinda fixed the problem for 2000-01 with an upgraded chain. But... jumping and chains don't mix on the Scrambler models. Jumping has also cracked transmission cases on this model. The Scrambler is a great all around machine but "Big Air" is not one of it's forte's.

There was plenty of slack in the chain. At least an inch to inch and a half. I had not tightened it yet. All i did was keep it clean and lubed. Anyhow it dosent matter any more. I have decided to get rid of it for a Rubicon. I donet get that big of a kick out of big air and i like to do more slow playing and hill climing. Hopefuly by mid february i will get to trade.
