Can I use GM Dex-Cool ?
#2
Any name brand coolant these days is designed for aluminum rads. There aren't too many coppercore rads kicking around in the automotive world. If you do use Dex-cool, be sure to drain ALL of the green stuff out of it as they are NOT compatible. Stay away from coolant that says it'll work with all types of coolant because it's not.

I wouldn't use it. If you see differant colors like green, yellow, red, orange etc, they are made of differant chemical compositions hence differant colors to keep them seperate. I strongly reccomend staying with the same color and not mixing.
The same goes for ATF fluid. There are so many differant kinds between the differant manufatures that a generic ATF fluid can cause damage. Just for an example we had a lube kid at work put Mercon V in a SuperDuty that takes Mercon SP. The truck came back with the trans shuddering so bad you couldn't hardly get it out of the parking lot. It cost the dealer a complete overhaul of the trans replacing all the friction material in the unit. Very expensive learning lesson

i use dex cool in my scrambler because it is silicate free which is inmortant otherwise it will eat up the water pump mechanical seal. when i switched mine over i flushed everything out very well which is the most inportant part and haven't had any problems what so ever and i have been using it for over a year.

i my self have never been a big fan of mixing any brands or lubes as there must be a little differnce in them all. as far as the rad. coolant its pretty easy to drain and refill w/ water to flush it and refill w/ the new coolant.

I'm sure as long as you completely drain and flush the standard Green ethylene-glycol antifreeze out, it'll work, but I'd highly recommend against doing it (click here for link).
I actually drained and flushed all the Dexcool out of my '02 Silverado and replaced with silica-free Green stuff. I've had friends that have experienced problems with Dexcool, and I figure it's relatively cheap to replace antifreeze compared to having gaskets fail or manifolds get corroded.
Do a google search for Dexcool and I'm sure you'll find a boatload of websites and class action notifications on the stuff...

thats a interesting site. ive had gm cars and still run gmc trucks and never had any issues w/ the antifreeze(not to say it wouldnt happen) and keep mine to the full as close as i can. the thing is that polaris antifreeze is a 60/40 mix where most others are a 50/50 mix so the polaris stuff would cool better. yea i know its expensive but for less then a gallon and how often to actually change it out. why try to save a few dollars on a brought that cost $5,000 and up. just my own way of thinking.

Dexcool actually works awesome in cars, when it goes bad is because people do not keep an eye on their temp gauge. When your engine overheats with water, usaually a cracked head or water pump is your worst case, but with dexcool,it turns to sludge and goodbye engine!!If you have half a brain not to drive a car heating the coolant over 220,no problems!!!
I drive my car(2001 pontiac grand prix-modded)like a leadfooted maniac and it never gets above 195 even in the summer,in traffic, with the ac on...
as far as atv's...why bother doing anything other than the recommended coolant? there is just no advantage and its not worth the risk! listen to klier and scrammytodd
