Default RPM running bit high

I have an 04 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO and just installed a plow system on it. When I first get out there to plow my RPM is low (1200-1300) and shifts in and out of gear great. But as I continue to use the wheeler the RPM won't drop below 1500 RPM and shifting into gear cause it to grind a bit.

Anyone have this problem? Should I change the jet and if so to what size? I live in upstate NY.

i would just turn the idle screw out a little to slow it down... listen to the engin and you will find the sweet spot... im no expert but if you needed to change your jet i think you would be going through plugs..

I know the idle screw is on the carb but could you give an exact location? Do you have any idea what RPM I should be running at?

no idea where it is on a 500 but it should be easy to find... it will be the only screw adjustment on there that you can adjust by hand... long brass looking?? might me on the right side points downwards... and as far at the rpm i go by sound...

Ok... I'll take a peek and screw around with it. Excuse the pun. Thanks!

mine is a brass knobby looking screw that points down. mine runs high when its cold - colder air menas more air means runs faster. Mine idled around 1300 until I adjusted the screw. back it off slow until you get to about 1100 rpm

im in upstate ny too - its cooooooold

turn it counter clock wise to idle it down a little. when you idle it down when the engines warm to around 11 to 1200 rpms. when you first start it you might have tohold the throttle to keep it going as they run low idle untiul thewy warm up some.

Idle speed for 2005 Sportsman 400/500
Idle speed for 2006 Sportsman 450/500........Is 1100+/- 200 RPM....

So anywhere for 900 to 1300 RPM...........Hope that helps!!...As per Polaris Factory Service Manual!!............................Caper......... ....

do a plug check every once in awhile the colder more dence air will make motor run lean even if nothing else has been changed. better checked than broke

Okay! This helps a lot Guys! I'm running when warm at 1400 to 1500 RPMs. It's about 1200 to 1300 when cold start. It shifts fine at that level so I'll shoot for the 1200-1300 range.
