4x4 problems

Hi guys looking for help with diagnosing a 4x4 issue. My front right hub seems to only lock intermittently. I replaced the actuator plate in the hub and cleaned and refilled the oil. I also added dialectic grease to all the wire connections. It seems if I drive it a little then the hub will lock and unlock. Funny thing is it will not lock at all in reverse. I tried holding the override switch in, makes no difference forward or reverse. If I do NOT activate the overide switch sometimes I can still back up as fast as I want like its not working, yet sometimes it works as it should.
I have power (12v) to the hub at the connection located near the top of the radiator, so I am assuming there is power to the hub. I checked all the wiring and do not see any damaged wires.
Is it a possibility the 4x4 switch is bad? or is it the override switch?? Where do I look next. I really would like to avoid the cost to have it repaired at the dealership!!

If I remember correctly, the fill hole should be at the 4 o'clock position. Fill it up with the plug at the 12 o'clock position and then turn the hub to the 4 oclock position to drain the excess out.

SCRAMMYTODD is right on. Fill the hub rotate it 90 degrees or so let it drain down and replace the plug. I am thinking you have an electrical problem. I have a 96 that has been doing the exact same thing and instead of foolin with it I am just going to replace everything from and including the switch to the hubs.

If these things dont help then, try pulling the hub apart. Pay close attention to the actual hilliard assembly.The rollers should move in and out freely(be careful not to stretch the spring!! That spring keeps the hub from locking in @ high speed!! If the rollers dont move freely then you can try what i did and file the slots a little. It worked for me. I don't know if you have the plastic or alminum clutches so it may or may not pertain to your specific needs.My .02 . . . .

Do an ohmeter check on the hub wiring first. I believe you should have 23ohms resistance. I'd have to check the book at work to make sure and I won't be there till Wednesday! Woo hoo. Ok sorry. If you don't have that resistance and it is infinite resistance(open), check your wiring for a broken wire. If it's good, pull the hub apart and start inspecting. Make sure the armature plate is perfectly flat. No warpage. Check the hub coil face and make sure it isn't chewed up either. Loose wheel bearings can cause it too.
I was working on an 02 700 a couple days ago and found one of the brown wires coming off the key switch was split in two. He had said the 4wd didn't work in reversea(i couldn't drive it to verify cause the motor was brought to me in a basket) but, i did notice I could not scroll through the options on the speedometer which of course is done with the override button. After I repaeired the wire, everything worked correctly. Scrolling, 4wd(got the motor done too) etc. Maybe check out the wiring under the front cover. I have seen several machines with various issues because of broken wired under that cover.
I just noticed the year you have. I don't think your speedo has the scroll function like the newer ones. Still check out the wiring though.
