You wouldn't believe what I did to my 08' Sportsman 800 today... I put an ATV path up a steep piece of property I own. There is one spot that is just too steep (~35-40 degrees) and requires winching or the Polaris will flip over. I got to that point today, set the parking brake, and hooked up the winch cable to a tree about 40' ahead as usual. I then used the winch AND the motor to pull myself up, and eventually got to a point where the front wheels were staying on the ground and there was some slack in the winch cable. Instead of letting the belt slip and wait for the winch cable to become taut again, I decided to just keep going and let the winch cable trail behind, then I was going to reel in the winch cable once I got to a point where I could safely stop without fear of flipping the Polaris. Well, wouldn't you know it, the winch cable stuck between the lugs on the left rear tire, then began wrapping around the axle where the brake rotor would be if it had two rear rotors. Eventually it pulled taut OVER the rear tire that currently has 4 miles on it and sliced right through the tread. The tire then popped off the bead. I though I had initially just unseated the bead, and was going to try to use the winch cable over a branch to lift the rear off the ground to use my air compressor to try and reseat the bead until I saw the winch cable buried in the middle of the tread. The tire is shot.
Funny thing, I was looking at new Maxxis tires just last night, but the traction from the stock tires is great on the dirt and leaves that I use myh ATV on. Now I'm rethinking of switching out the tires again...
Wondering if a winch rope would have also cut the tire, I bet not... maybe I should swap out the 3/16" cable for a synthetic rope??

I swaped my cable for rope, I think there is a strap that would work too.....someone on a different thread told me to never let your cable go to far under the machine when its moving.....it could cause many problems.....I now see why he said that.....too bad about the tire.....my guess is the rope would have done the same thing if pulled tight enough......sounds like you have a great place to ride........

Well, I ordered two Maxxis BigHorn 26x12x12 tires to replace both rear Polaris Carlisle 26x11x12 stock tires. I will keep the front tires stock for now, hope any slight difference in overall diameter will not be a problem, I never ride it on pavement, just dirt, gravel, and light mud... oh, and a LOT of dead leaves.
I've used cables on winches all my life and never had one snap. I fear going to a synthetic rope, as I have heard of folks snapping them. When I'm using my winch, if the rope snaps, the front will be coming off the ground, and I'll be falling off the back with the Polaris soon to follow suit, probably ending up on top of me. I cannot afford a failure when I'm winching.
Suggestions? Stick with cable?

I had heard the rope has a higher rating than the cable.....however i am new to winching.......if you have had good luck [as i know many of my friends have had] with the cable....i would stick with it.......

My cable has frayed after 7 hours of plowing. Thanks to the experience shared on this forum I NOW know this is not uncommon. First thought is that it was a warranty deal. I think I'll fire up the search and see what I can find on this hawse and synthetic rope.
