Thanks about the info on the reverse button, appreciate it. Now another question. I just bought a new starter and gear, but for some reason the starter turns but almost immediately it kicks out and free spins. It will start after five or six hits to the starter button, but what makes it spin out?

I would guess the Bendix is sticking, or the starter isn't spinning fast enough. Check and make sure there is over 12 volts to the starter while cranking.

What bike did you change the starter on?

I replaced the starter and bendix on an 02 Sportsman 500 in Nov. Since the install the bendix has been doing exactly whay you describe.

I called the dealer yesterday and they are going to supply me with a new bendix. I assume that will solve my problem.

Do you recall how much the starter and bendix cost?
With a fresh battery and good charge mine clicks as if the bendix was not engaging.
When it finally does the starter seams fine.
Is it possible to change the bendix alone without replacing the starter?
I say Bendix because I cannot spell silinoid.

DEERKILLER the Bendix and solenoid are two differant things. The solenoid is mounted on the frame and controlls the power to the starter. The Bendix is under the recoil housing and engages the starter motor to the ring gear on the flywheel.

Thanks Scrammy,
What do you think the verdict is, silinoid or Bendix hanging up. It seams to work more often after it's warmed up. Can the Bendix be changed independently from the starter?

I would say check for voltage at the terminal on the starter when it just clicks. If you have 12 volts there I would say the the brushes are stuck in the starter. If you have no power at the starter check for power on the starter side of the solenoid. And yes the Benidix is seperate from the starter.
