I've used a chain breaker with success but on a smaller chain.

 

I just did a google search of chain breakers. there are several different kinds. maybe I was useing a cheap kind or one that was for cutting smaller chain??.....obviously I didnt do something right...the one I used was like a smaller gear puller, locked onto the inside of the link then you tight it and it pushes the pin in the link out. problem was it bent the link as it pushed the pin out. anyway ....maybe this thread will keep someone from bending there chain like I did.....them chains aint cheap!

 

just got thru cutting new chain. cut the head off on each side of the pin. then cut in center of out side link and it popped right off. no beating needed.
